About Us

The Center for Aikido Study (Joshinkan Dojo) has been operating under the guidance of Sensei Jon Whatley since 2020. The dojo was founded by Sensei Bill Bunn Rokudan. The school is a member of the Aikido Association of America, and is affiliated with both the Aikikai Foundation and World Aikido Headquarters, Tokyo Japan.

Instruction is focused towards both the basic principles of Aikido and their applications in technique. Above all, it is taught at your level of ability.

What is Aikido?

Aikido is a budo or "martial way" that is drawn from traditional Japanese martial arts. In Aikido we put great focus on movement, balance, posture, and your state of mind, and how this influences your connection with others. In Aikido we look inwards to make changes in ourselves, so we can lead others to change.

About the Instructors

The Center for Aikido Study is a 501(c) nonprofit, all of the instructors volunteer their time, and all dues go to maintain the dojo.

Sensei Jon Whatley holds the rank of Godan (5th degree black belt) and is the Chief Instructor at Joshinkan Dojo. He has been a guest instructor throughout the U.S.

Sensei Mary Turner holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree black belt).

Sensei Dave Frampton holds the rank of Yondan (4th degree black belt).

Whatley Sensei teaches on Tuesday and Thursday nights, while Frampton Sensei teaches on Wednesday nights.

Introductory Classes

If you are interested in training at the dojo, there are two ways to start. If you have previous Aikido training, please meet with Sensei Whatley about membership. If you are visiting the area, and are current training at a dojo, you are most welcome to come visit with us and train.

If you are new to Aikido, we ask that you join for one month and attend as many classes as possible. You will be paired up with an instructor who will work with you and show you basic movements and how to safely train. If after your introductory month you are interested in continuing your training, we can set up your membership. As mentioned before, we have no contracts.

Monthly Dues

Dues are $65 a month.

There are no contracts involved in Center for Aikido Study membership.
